About the Item

There is a long story behind this huge antique gilded mirror from Scotland and it begins in Colne, England, which dates itself back to the “Stone Age”. This magnificent, carved and water gilded Scottish mirror, sat upstairs, in an antique dealer’s warehouse for years and was hidden away for his own personal use. For seven years consecutively, we tried endlessly, to purchase this antique carved gilded mirror, with no success. Finally, on year eight, in a weak moment, he allowed us to buy the mirror. When we inquired about the history of this antique carved water-gilded mirror, the dealer told us, that it came from a large manor home, in Northern Scotland. What you cannot see now, is that this antique gilded mirror, was covered in layers of thick, white, high gloss paint, which when I think about it, probably saved the gilding from the elements. Locally, here in the Chicago area, there is a conservator, who took over a year and much prodding, to carefully pick away at the white paint, all the while, not disturbing the original 24kt gold water gilding. How Craig Deller, the master conservator, had the patience to save the water-gilding, of this incredible antique mirror, I’ll never know, but it is completely undetectable and his workmanship is truly superb. This is a one-of-a-kind carved and gilded mirror and if we did not just downsize, it would have followed us to our new home. Craig Deller, of the Deller Conservation Group in Geneva, Illinois. Craig has been a member of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works since 1983, and was elected as a Professional Associate in 1993. Craig Deller was trained at the Smithsonian Institution's Conservation Analytical Laboratory (CAL) and audited the Furniture Conservation Training Program there.
