About the Item

Finest Art Deco Hagenauer Vienna hand mirror. The appearance of mirror's handhold is strongly influenced by designs once created in so-said Wiener Werkstaette, exceedingly by the patterns & decorations having been designed by Dagobert Peche (1887-1923): He was the most famous Austrian artist and metalworker designer during Turn of Century until 1923, having been, too, cooperator of Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) as from the year 1915 when Peche was engaged to work on behalf of Wiener Werkstaette. On the other hand, ornaments on mirror's handhold seems to be a bit 'stronger' than Peche's decorative designs had ever been looked like = this feature is typical for Hagenauer Manufactory. Signed at edge of handhold (area below) by Viennese Hagenauer Manufactory: (= letters: Vienna / Austria & Signature WHW). Made circa 1930. Material: Brass and nickel-plated Size: Total length 30.7 cm (= 12.08 inches) Diameter of mirror 12.5 cm (= 4.92 inches) Detailed information about the manufactory: Franz Hagenauer (1906-1986) und Karl Hagenauer (1898–1956) were Austrian sculptors. Karl Hagenauer joined the Hagenauer firm in 1918 when he was twenty years old. Franz Hagenauer studied sculpture as from the year 1921, having been pupil of Anton Hanak. Franz worked with his brother Karl at the so-said Hagenauer Werkstätte (= Hagenauer Manufactory) in Vienna which had been founded by the brothers' father Carl Hagenauer (1871 - 1928) in the year 1898. - Finally, Franz Hagenauer became Professor for sculpture of metal forms at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in the year 1962. Karl Hagenauer was very active in the Twenties, too, when he designed lamps, candlesticks, bowls, bookends, ashtrays etc. being strongly impressed by Art Deco as well as by this characteristic minimalist or ironic style having been most loved by his customers, collectors of finest Arts & Crafts items esteem Hagenauer's small brass figures which transfer Viennese tradition of bronze manufacturing into a modern form. Hagenauer's large expressive works made of copper having been created in period from the 1920s until end of 1930s are very interesting for art historians, these items were modelled from a specific point of view, reducing the items' shapes in very special manner.
