About the Item
This is a rare wall mirror from the renowned Stobwasser manufactory, made around 1800 in either Berlin or Brunswick. This tall, rectangular mirror with original mirror glass impresses with its fine craftsmanship. The top and bottom are openwork and intricately carved with a gold leaf finish. The frame is finished with fine mahogany veneer. In the upper section, a central oval lacquer panel depicts two ladies with a dog in an idealized landscape, probably inspired by Dutch Baroque painting. This painting exemplifies the exceptional quality of Stobwasser's lacquer artistry, which was highly esteemed throughout Europe.
Under Johann Heinrich Stobwasser's (1740-1829) leadership, the manufactory, founded in 1763 by his father Sigmund , developed into one of Europe's leading manufacturers of luxury goods, including boxes, accessories, and furniture. The manufactory's esteemed customers included the Weimar royal family, the Prussian palaces, and the Russian tsar's court, as well as important personalities such as Goethe, Schiller, and E. T. A. Hoffmann.
This mirror is an extraordinary example of the combination of art, craftsmanship, and the representative aspirations of that time. Thanks to the historic Stobwasser manufactory, the mirror is more than just a tasteful piece of furniture—it is a piece of history.
