About the Item

This handsome Federal period drop center shaving mirror, dating to the early 19th century, reflects both the refinement and practicality of early American design. Crafted in rich mahogany, the mirror is framed by bold turned supports and set above a case of drawers with a distinctive drop center form. The balanced symmetry and restrained ornamentation speak to the ideals of the Federal style, where beauty and utility were elegantly combined. The case features two banks of drawers flanking a deeper center drawer, offering convenient storage for grooming tools and personal items. The scalloped apron and turned feet add subtle decorative flair, while the mirror remains functional and adjustable. Its size and proportion make it versatile as both a dressing accessory and a decorative accent. This mirror comes with notable provenance from the Collection of Barbara Rothschild Michaels and Roger Michaels of New York City and Ossining, New York, with many items in the family collection having passed down from the Estate of Herbert and Nannette Rothschild. It remains in nice antique condition, consistent with age and normal use. The mirror plate shows expected signs of age and silvering, adding character without detracting from its utility. With its combination of form, function, and historical significance, this Federal period shaving mirror would be a fine addition to a collection or a thoughtful accent for a traditional interior. 25h x 26w x 9d
