About the Item

A mid 18th century Italian carved and gilded mirror with a swag and horn crest surmounted by an oval cartouche containing a bust of a man with a Medieval headpiece, probably Dante. The surface is original and shows beautifully. The passage written in pen and ink on paper pasted to the back is a quote from Book 3, Canto 5 of Edmund Spenser’s ‘Faerie Queene,’ where Belphoebe finds Timias wounded, and proceeds to gather herbs to treat his wounds. This wound indicate ownership in England sometime in the 18th century.
