About the Item
This beautiful golden mirror was made in Northern France in 1879 as is carved in the crest.
The mirror was enriched with an elaborate crest featuring central putti or angel figure swinging on a rope. The putti are flanked by scrolls, acanthus, and branches of Laurel. The mirror frame has the upper rounded corners typical for the Elegant French Louis Philippe style. It was gilt by the use of gold leaf and gold paint. The gold leaf parts were polished to a high degree of gloss and these parts show the black undercoat with clearly defined gold lines where the sheets of gold leaf overlapped. There is some fading of the gold, both in gold leaf as well as gold paint. The with gesso shines through the fading gold paint here and there. The black and white undertone gives the mirror a special color finish and the fading contributes well to the overall antique look and feel of the piece.
The glass is authentic to the frame and is an old thick silver nitrate silvered plate. The glass shows extensive crackled wear and a yellowish glow. This has occurred under the influence of the paint that was used to protect the silver layer at the back. The mirror is in very good authentic condition and is ready for use.

- Condition:Repaired: A small repair was done to the top ornament. Replacements made: A new protective pine back cladding was added. Wear consistent with age and use. The glass was removed form the frame and the whole piece was gently cleaned. The glass was firmly reinserted and a new pine back cladding added. The mirror is clean, solid and ready for use.
