French Folk Tramp Art Notched Wood Frame Wall Mirror - Circa 1900

About the Item

This French Tramp Art mirror dates to around 1900 and exemplifies the resourceful folk‐art carving tradition that repurposed scrap wood into decorative objects. The rectangular mirror glass is housed within a densely carved frame of layered pine, its surface enlivened by precise, repetitive notching that creates a subtle rhythmic pattern around the perimeter. Each layer of wood was individually cut and stacked, then hand-whittled to form the signature “chip” texture that gives Tramp Art its distinctive appeal. On the reverse, a simple paper backing protects the mirror’s surface, and a modern hanging wire is secured to the wood, allowing for safe wall mounting. The shallow 1½″ depth lets the mirror sit nearly flush against the wall or above a mantel. Natural variations in the aged pine lend authenticity and vintage character. Ideal for entry halls, powder rooms, or as an accent in a living space, this mirror reflects both light and history, infusing interiors with a charming, rustic elegance. Whether used to enlarge a narrow corridor or to punctuate a gallery wall of folk‐art treasures, its handcrafted notched frame and turn-of-the-century provenance make it a captivating focal point in any décor.
