Mid 18th Century French Regence Mirorr

About the Item

The frame of this luxurious mirror is made of carved and gilded wood, with silver-plated and green-painted details. The gilding is done using the traditional technique of gilding objects with gold leaf. Certain elements of the frame are silver-plated with silver leaf, while details are painted in a greenish color. The frame is made of softwood suitable for detailed carving, such as linden wood. The mirror consists of a rectangular lower part with an arched upper element. The lower part has a carved frame of gilded wood with a double border of foliate C-scrolls intertwined with vine leaves. The vine leaves are silver-plated and show traces of a greenish color. The upper part of the mirror is in the form of an arch formed by two "C" scrolls and a central cartouche placed above them. The borders of the scrolls and cartouche are filled with wide grooves. In the central part of this arched element, there is a motif of a basket from which fruits emerge in combination with leaves. The leaves are silver-plated and show traces of a greenish color. The basket full of fruit and leaves is a reference to the cornucopia, and as such, it is a symbol of abundance and wealth. The mirror with its sinuous contours and elaborate decoration has a truly luxurious appearance. The design of the mirror possesses some peculiarities of the grandiose Louis XIV style, but the composition is lighter and more playful, announcing the graceful Louis XV style. Thus, the style of the mirror actually represents the transition between these two styles, known as the French Régence style. This mirror belongs to the type of mirror that was very popular in France in the 18th century and was intended for the homes of the affluent bourgeoisie. Mirrors of this type could be of various sizes, but they always had essentially identical forms. They were made in series in workshops in southern France and were intended for sale at the famous fair in the small town of Beaucaire on the banks of the Rhone River. Hence, this type of mirror is known as the "Beaucaire mirror". Incidentally, the tradition of holding fairs in Beaucaire was established as far back as 1217, and this fair attracted merchants from all over the world, Europe, and all parts of France.
