About the Item

Pair of Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze Wall Appliqués with Bacchic Masks, Cut Glass Medallions, and Ribbon Crests Possibly French or American, Late 19th to Early 20th Century A finely cast and architecturally scaled pair of Louis XVI style gilt bronze wall appliqués, each designed with a dramatic neoclassical motif centered around a theatrical Bacchic mask. The masks—possibly depicting Dionysus or Pan—are framed by deeply chased curls and beard, with a crossed set of thyrsi or flutes beneath the chin, emblematic of the wine god’s traditional attributes. Suspended below is a circular grapevine wreath in full relief, composed of individually cast grape clusters and foliate segments. Above the masks, a deeply cut starburst glass medallion adds brilliant light reflection and textural contrast. The central mirrored glass disk is set into a circular mount and flanked by long, fluted ribbon-form drops, culminating in exuberant ribbon-tied crests at the top. The combination of classically inspired ornament, glittering cut glass, and high-relief casting typifies late 19th-century revivalist taste, particularly in decorative arts aligned with the hôtel particulier and Beaux-Arts interiors of the period. This pair is stylistically consistent with work by Henri Vian (active in Paris, late 19th century) or Edward F. Caldwell & Co. of New York, both known for merging neoclassical themes with high-quality gilded bronze and mirrored elements. Measurements: 23.5 inches high x 7.75 inches wide (each).
