Regence to Louis XV Transitional Style Giltwood Mirror with Bow Arch
About the Item
With later beveled plate .The whole with pierced crest, floral or foliate motifs and 'c' scrolls throughout. Touchups to gilt. Extensive bleeding of the bole in three charming colors, the usual Venetian red, a more Italian orange and a Chinese reddish orange.
The finish in distress as charming as it is . Losses and subsequent touchups or repairs .
Crisp, deep and detailed carving. Crest above the mirror plate is a shallow bow arch .
Dirt grime, touchups, minor losses. Original backboards gone.
The Régence (French pronunciation: [ʁeʒɑ̃s], Regency) was the period in French history between 1715 and 1723 when King Louis XV was considered a minor and the country was instead governed by Philippe d'Orléans (a nephew of Louis XIV of France) as prince regent . In furnishings it is a transitional period between Louis Xiv and Louis Xv (rococo proper ).
