Entirely hand-carved from solid nutwood (walnut), this one-of-a-kind piece is a rare survivor of the 19th-century Grand Tour tradition — a time when travel and culture were deeply intertwined.
A Grand Tour Relic With History. Originating from Switzerland, this magnificent frame exemplifies the romantic fascination with ancient ruins, which captivated the imagination of Europe's elite travelers during the latter half of the 1800s. Wealthy young aristocrats and intellectuals would embark on extended Grand Tours — journeys through the cultural capitals of Europe that could last over a year. Along the way, they acquired fine and exotic objects, like this carved frame, to display back home as evidence of their taste, education, and status.
A Masterpiece of Black Forest Carving. This frame is an outstanding example of Swiss Black Forest craftsmanship, richly decorated with naturalistic motifs: grapevines, lush foliage, temple brickwork, and floral embellishments—all meticulously chiseled in high relief.
