About the Item
In the industry lots of material is wasted. After finding out over 25% of any leather skin ends up in leftovers I was inspired to create the Skin collection. While researching this phenomenon it was clear that this is the common result in producing leather sofas, bags and jackets. Nearly the entire Leather industry deals with the fact that the animals shape does not meet their patterns.
The amount of leather scraps shocked me. In reaction upon that I started to collect the offcuts. Randomly putting them together applying them as a new skin to existing objects. I have had the habit ever since to collect damaged or discarded furniture’s from the street and flea markets and collected them at my studio. Skin Collection makes use of merging these types of frames for its skeleton, a skin of leather leftovers growing as a cell like structure covering the objects.
We do custom editions as well so get in contact if you want your item to be skinned.

Studio Pepe Heykoop
Pepe Heykoop (1984) studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven, graduated in 2008. Studio Pepe Heykoop was founded in 2009, while his collaboration with Tiny Miracles started in 2010. The work of Dutch designer Pepe Heykoop straddles two worlds—the collectible pieces made in his Amsterdam studio, and the retail products made with women in a slum in Mumbai, India, as part of the Tiny Miracles Foundation, setup by his cousin. Yet these two facets of his practice are not incompatible. Both reflect Heykoop’s idealism and vision as a designer, both enable his exploration in the handmade. Recycling is at the heart of many of Heykoop’s designs, turning waste into wonder. Multiple award winning products and nominations underline his vision. Pepe's unique works are sold to collectors in the field. Recently the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum NY acquired a piece of his Skin Collection.

Bits of Wood Coffee Table by Pepe Heykoop
By Pepe Heykoop
Located in Amsterdam, NL
The local sawmill produces lots of waste wood. Adorable bits and beautiful types but all different in size. That makes them hard to use for a regular production. The common thought is to sell it as firewood.
Tin is a type of metal that melts at a relatively low melting point of 232 degrees Celsius. Once it has molten it is just liquid enough to flow around the bits of wood, filling up the gaps. Its temperature is just not hot enough to burn the hardwood resulting in metal that flows around the hardwood and solidifies in cloud like shapes. Not any glue or screws are used keeping the wood together. Only a combination of leftover hardwood and old tin pots and plates were molten into in a collection of stools, tables and coffee tables.
