Antique British Colonial Four Poster Queen-Size Bed in Cuban Mahogany, c. 1820

About the Item

An exceptionally beautiful British-colonial bed from the West Indies in Cuban mahogany, circa 1820. Adapted in our workshop to fit a standard queen size mattress, this exceptional bed features four reeded posts with very well-articulated carvings of pineapples & tropical foliage, and a headboard with carved scrolls, acanthus leaves & a flower with four petals that might be a mustard flower. The headboard, footboard & four posts are original. New side rails were made to lengthen bed to a queen size. Original side rails, which are 70 1/2 " long, come with the bed. The bed can be assembled in its original format, if desired. The last 3 images show the bed with its original side rails and L brackets. Purchaser will receive both the original side rails and the extended side rails The posts are each made of solid Cuban mahogany and are of one piece of wood that has been turned and carved from the feet to the pineapple finials. The headboard has a crotch-mahogany veneer over solid mahogany wood in the panels and is surrounded by a solid mahogany frame. The original side rails, as well as the head and foot rails are of solid mahogany. The original tester which was missing was replaced, as well as the bed bolt covers (photographed). All of the bed bolts were replaced on the side rails and the head & foot rails to assure a perfect mechanical assembly. Measures: 62 1/2" wide x 89 1/4" long x 97" high Note: Takes a standard queen mattress which will rest on the custom box we are including with the bed. May be made to fit a king mattress for an additional cost.

Refinished. Additions or alterations made to the original: We re-made side rails to fit queen mattress & saved original rails so the bed could be re-assembled in its original form. Bed is very solid & fits together w/ new bed bolts & nuts to insure tight connections. Custom box measures 80" l x 54" w x 6" h. Wear consistent with age and use. An exceptional bed in solid mahogany. Posts are turned & carved from 1 piece of wood. Original side, head & foot rails are of solid mahogany. Bed is strong when assembled & does not wobble or creak. New longer side rails are in stained poplar.
