He was a designer for Johnson Furniture for over 30 years and then Tomlinson of High Point, North Carolina for three years following his time with Johnson. He studied at Carnegie Institute, and he also studied design in Europe for several years. He was a salesman, a designer, a lecturer, and past president of Grand Rapids Furniture Designers Association in 1940. Mr. Rutili passed away May 26, 1966. Johnson Furniture was founded in 1903 by three brothers who emigrated from Sweden in 1887: Carl, Hjalmar, and Axel. Carl had received a medal from the King of Sweden for his cabinetmaking. They hired Tom Handley as the in-house designer in 1908 and also became an officer for them in 1922 and was with the company until his death in 1926. He established Johnson – Handley – Johnson as a companion company and both entities as major producers of high quality, period revival, residential furniture. Johnson produced wood residential furniture for the bedroom, while the Johnson- Handley- Johnson label was used for dining suites, occasional tables, and case pieces. Designer David Robinson led Johnson into the production of Art Deco and Modern lines in 1928. The company claimed that they were the first to produce a complete line of Modern furniture in the United States. Lorenzo (Renzo) Rutili served as head of design from 1933 into the 60s. He personally designed groups in Modern and Neoclassical repertoires and oversaw contracted design lines by famous designers including D. Robertson Smith, Paul Frankl, Eliel Saarinen, and J. Robert F. and Pipsam Swanson. In 1963 the last family member Earl Johnson retired, and the company merged with Timber-Line Inc, while still retaining the Johnson name. In 1968 until 1975 the company was owned by Holiday Inns, Inc. and in 1983 it sold to Rose Manufacturing. It is going to add just the right splash of mid-century modern magnificence to any bedroom in your home where you will be sure to sleep in stylish splendor. Kipp Stewart, a celebrated American designer, born in 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania did not lead a charmed childhood. Sent to California to live with distant relatives at a young age, you could call him a self-made man. His furniture designing fate was sealed at 15 when hitchhiking to school he passed a storefront shop and studio on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles with pencil industrial drawings in the windows and fell in love with them. Kipp worked hard, turning down a track and field scholarship at USC and instead enrolled at Chouinard Art Institute in the late 1940s. Again, he worked very hard days and nights becoming a renowned artist, architect, and award-winning designer. He currently resides in Carmel, California and is still painting. Alexander Stewart Orton MacDougall was born in the late 1920s in Pasadena and grew up in a Green and Green house which he credits for his fascination and love of design. Judged early with a learning disability which he obviously overcame, Stewart attended Chouinard Art Institute after a short time in the Navy. He then went to work for Victor Gruen and Associates where he met his mentor Rudolf Baumfeld who had studied under Le Courbusier...

1971 MCM Lane Headboard Tower Suite Collection Full/Queen Bed Rosewood & Walnut
By Lane Furniture
Located in Topeka, KS
Marvelous vintage Mid-Century Modern headboard Lane Furniture Tower Suite Collection comprised of walnut and rosewood. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been restored or refinished. Please see photos and zoom in for details as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 10-18-1971. Sometimes the best thing to do first thing in the morning is go right back to bed! And honestly, with a bed this beautiful, you may never want to get up!!! This is an INCREDIBLE full or queen sized “Tower Suite Collection” headboard by Lane Furniture!! It bears a lovely contrast of a walnut frame and fabulous decorative rosewood inlays across the front and both sides. This is a classic beauty with a Mid-Century Modern style that you are sure to love for years to come. It is going to be gorgeous in your bedroom! All you need is a full or queen-sized mattress and a Hollywood frame OR if you don’t mind the opinion of my mom, who is an EXCEPTIONAL retired interior designer… She would have a hanging mechanism or wall cleat made so that you can attach it to the wall and lift it a little higher, use a platform rather than a Hollywood frame, and toss out the box springs as mattresses today are much taller than they used to be. Annnnnd, Voila! Maximum exposure of the headboard! If that sounds like something you would be interested in, we would be happy to provide a wall cleat upon purchase of the headboard. This is a gorgeous example of high-quality craftsmanship constructed with exquisite woods and attention to detail quintessential of Lane Furniture. You simply can’t go wrong! Lane was founded in 1912 by Edward Hudson Lane at the age of 21, upon his father’s suggestion after he, John Edward Lane, bought a small packing-box plant in Altavista, Virginia. Edward procured a loan and converted the factory to make cedar chests and named it The Standard Red Cedar Chest Co. Sales were good and the company expanded. But during WWI, with the banning of rail freight deemed non-essential, they began making pine ammunition boxes. This is notable as it led to an assembly line which was revolutionary and became the first moving conveyor assembly system in the furniture industry. After the war, with sales still increasing, Ed Lane decided he could risk giving the company his name and changed it to The Lane Co...
