About the Item

Octagonal Drum Cabinet / Pedestal / Stand France, mid-19th century Dimensions: H × Ø: 84 × 38 cm Description: Octagonal drum cabinet, versatile in use as a side table, bedside cabinet or pedestal. The slightly protruding base echoes the width of the upper section with its integrated marble top, while the central corpus is recessed. Two of the eight side panels form a door that opens to a storage compartment with shelf. Above, separated by a moulded profile, is a drawer. The cabinet is finely crafted on all sides, set on casters and thus easily movable within the room. The grey-white veined Carrara marble top is suitable both for everyday items such as keys and purses and as a stable support for a bust or other art objects. Background: Drum cabinets are among the characteristic small pieces of furniture of the 19th century. They were often used as bedside or side furniture. The combination of fine veneer and marble top combined decorative appeal with practical benefits—especially in bedrooms, where the stone offered hygienic advantages. The octagonal form is significantly rarer than the circular variant and illustrates the creative range of cabinetmaking around 1835–1845. Condition: Restored, very good condition. Surface finished with French polish; marble top intact with only minor age-related wear.
