Jug and Shaving Basin Set. Silver. Juan De San Fauri, Madrid, 1768
Located in Madrid, ES
Jug set with basin made in silver in its color. The basin has the usual curve to place it in the neck (notch), and a profile throughout the piece of fine smooth moldings (drawing scrolls in the piece) following the curves and peaks that are drawn in the outline of the same and they extend towards the bottom, which remains smooth. The jug has an oval base with slight curves and a body divided into two areas (wider in its lower half, thin in the upper) with a series of "segments" curved; the peak shows a simple architectural decoration and smooth areas; the handle a curve with volutes and a contracurva vegetable (drawing both a spice of "S" inverted); the cover follows the lines of the body and is topped with a vegetable form. The contrast marks of the pieces place the manufacture of the same in Madrid (punches of Villa and Court with the number 68), giving the date of 1768. The silversmith seems to have been Juan de San Fauri, who works towards mideighteenth century in Madrid. With Philip V many French influences arrived at the silver, along with some Italian influences, both from the hand of artisans of these origins and from pieces. It continues with a scarce marking in the works except in the important centers, like Madrid, and the civil typologies acquired great importance. As in the rest of the country, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical trends coexisted in the Court, although, being the center that set the tone for the rest, the first moves away soon, introduces the Rococo before 1740 or on that date, and the Neoclassicism towards 1770 (imposing gradually since 1780). The curved forms of the basin are reminiscent of the so-called "contours" that were characteristic of eighteenth-century Rococo silverware and very frequent, especially in plates and trays. However, especially in the case of the jug, it is possible to speak of a certain relationship with Neoclassical models. As for the jug, it follows the most common prototype since the arrival of the Bourbons, characterized by its European influence and the great difference it shows with the type known as "jug de pico". Compare this game with the Francisco García vinajera (inventory 03487) of the Cerralbo Museum in Madrid or with the copy of Medina-Sidonia (code 59906, Catalog of the Andalusian Furniture...
