Pair of Unopened Congress Art Deco Playing Card Decks in Original Box
Located in Red Lion, PA
Pair of Unopened Congress Art Deco Playing Card Decks in Original Box – Sealed with 10-Cent Tax Stamp
This pair of unopened Congress Playing Card decks is a rare find, preserved in its original Art Deco box. The exterior of the box showcases an elegant floral block print design in black and gold on a deep red paper, exuding classic 1920s-1930s sophistication. The interior is lined in gold paper and features two compartments, each containing an unopened deck of cards wrapped in original wax paper and sealed with the U.S. Playing Card seal and a 10-cent playing card tax stamp, a mark of authenticity and a nod to its historical significance.
The two decks exhibit stunning Art Deco motifs, one featuring an intricate symmetrical pattern, while the other presents a bold geometric portrait of a man, titled "Serge" at the bottom. A sample card with a cut corner is included in each compartment, allowing a glimpse of the designs without breaking the seals. Despite its age, the cards remain in excellent antique condition, with only minor creasing and a tear/minor loss on the wax paper wrapping.
First introduced by The U.S. Playing Card Company in 1881, Congress Playing Cards were known for their luxurious quality and artistic designs, often featuring elaborate backs that reflected the era’s artistic trends. By the early 20th century, Congress decks became a status symbol, frequently gifted and collected for their refined craftsmanship and decorative appeal.
The 10-cent tax stamp on each deck dates back to the Revenue Act of 1894, when the U.S. government required playing card manufacturers to affix a tax stamp as proof of payment. These stamps remained in use until 1940, making them a valuable feature for collectors of vintage playing cards and historical ephemera.
Condition & Collectability
Cards: Pristine, sealed in original wax paper with only minor creasing; one tear in the wax paper.
Interior Box: Clean and well-preserved.
Exterior Box: Shows signs of wear with paper loss, dented and torn corners, water damage, and an affixed white sticker—evidence of its long history and original use.
This sealed pair of Congress Art Deco playing cards...

Rooms with a History Interiors and Their Inspirations
Located in New York, NY
Inspirational and visually on trend, Ashley Hicks's latest work is a pattern book for the 21st century. Offering insights and revelations, Hicks's own exquisitely quirky and colorful historicist interiors are discussed with designs from the recent and faraway past.
Ashley Hicks has created a mix of manifesto, souvenir album, and confession in this collection of noteworthy rooms--featuring his own one-of-a-kind interiors along with rooms that have inspired him. The manifesto aspect is rather limited, since Hicks is not a great believer in aesthetic rules or the value of so-called good taste, but as a souvenir album, it charts Hicks's personal creative journey of the last few years, illustrated with photographs of some favorite historical interiors and objects that represent a mixture of source material and inspiration.
The book's twelve chapters reveal Hicks's creative process, how he approaches different themes in his own interiors, furniture designs, and works of art, and how these themes can be applied to the works of others. Such subjects as flowers, color, layers, form, pattern, and memory are presented in the context of actual projects. Historical and recent interiors are discussed for their decorative value--notable rooms and architecture include the Pantheon in Rome; Emperor Maximilian's tomb in Innsbruck; the Royal Pavilion, Brighton; and the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Hicks has created a book for devotees of decorating and the history of interior design.
About the author

St. James Palace Skeleton Clock by Evans of Handsworth
By William F. Evans of Handsworth
Located in New Orleans, LA
Depicting St. James Palace in London, this remarkable two-train fusée architectural skeleton clock is a wonderful specimen of 19th-century English clockmaking. Crafted by the preeminent firm of Evans of Handsworth, Birmingham, this rare architectural model became popular around the golden anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign. The highly complex timepiece boasts a brass triple-layer frame, a characteristic found only in the most attractive and important Evans timepieces. Not only is this clock visually stunning, but it is also a mechanical triumph with its chain-driven fusée movement fronted by a porcelain face. Set upon its original rosewood marquetry base beneath a custom glass dome, this magnificent timepiece is among the finest examples of its kind.
The Birmingham firm of William F. Evans of Handsworth was one of the most respected makers of skeleton clocks. The golden age of their manufacture occurred during the second half of the 19th century, particularly from the 1860s through the 1880s, and the firm was renowned for the stellar quality, grand size and superior materials utilized in the creation of their clocks.
Skeleton clocks are among the most exceptional and intriguing timepieces ever made and were designed to display as much of the working mechanism as possible. Often the result of the highest quality workmanship, skeleton clocks are actually some of the earliest clocks, some dating from the mid-16th century as drum clocks...

Royal Brighton Pavilion Matchstick Architectural Model by Bernard Martell
By Bernard Martell
Located in New York, NY
Made in the 1960s from over 40,000 matchsticks by Bernard Martell. The artist spent over 1700 hours meticulously reproducing the architectural splendor of the Brighton Royal Pavilion in a 1:100 scale model. It was first exhibited at Marlborough House and then for many years alongside the Pavilion, in the town of Brighton, England.
The Royal Pavilion was built as seaside palace for King George IV by the architect John Nash in the Anglo-Raj style, very much in vogue in the English Regency period with its domes, minarets and intricate embellishments, inspired by the architecture in Colonial India. The building with its lavishly decorated interiors was finally completed in 1823 and remains very much intact to this day due to ongoing important preservation work.
This unique architectural model is presented in a custom made glass case and mounted on a black lacquered Parsons table.

A majestic representation of Westminster Abbey, this rare architectural skeleton clock of exceptional workmanship is attributed to Evans of Handsworth, Birmingham.
