About the Item

Precious marble and gemstone paperweight, souvenir of the Grand Tour, Rome, 19th century. Made of white Carrara marble with geometric inlays of porphyry, antique yellow marble, and lapis lazuli. The Grand Tour is a kind of secular pilgrimage, experienced as an indispensable cultural baptism by the European elites of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Rome is the privileged site of that itinerary. As with any self-respecting pilgrimage, those who make it feel the need to take tangible signs of their journey back home with them. If Catherine II of Russia ordered for the Hermitage a full-scale copy of Raphael's Vatican Loggias for which a veritable army of copyists had to be arranged, even those who could not afford such massive purchases were working to procure originals or copies of ancient works of art and as many souvenirs of their Italian Grand Tour as possible. It is the birth of the industry of the ancient and the beautiful, a curious phenomenon of supply and demand for memories of the eternal city, around which a galaxy of professional figures is created, from excavation to restoration, evaluation and trade. Very good condition, small signs of time. Measurements H cm 14.5 W cm 9 D cm 1.7
