1834-1850 The Works of Thomas Arnold

About the Item

A beautifully bound nine volume collection of works by and about the Anglican educator and theologian Thomas Arnold, including first and early editions of his works. Uniformly bound in sumptuous full calf, with gilt detailing to back strips. Arnold was an early supporter of the Broad Church Anglican movement, a headmaster of Rugby School, and a reformer of the public schools of England. Present here is a nine volume collection of works by and about Arnold, many of which are scarce, and including four first edition volumes, and three second editions. Present here are: The 1842 second edition of 'Christian Life, its Course, its Hindrance, and its Helps'. The scarce 1843 second edition of 'Christian Life, its Hopes, its Fears, and its Close'. The very scarce first edition of 'Sermons, Chiefly on the Interpretation of Scripture', 1845. The scarce second edition of 'Fragment on the Church', 1845. The two volume 1844 first edition of 'The Life and Correspondence of Thomas Arnold', by Arthur Penrhyn Stanley. With a portrait frontispiece to volume I. A three volume edition of 'Sermons', with volume I present in the 1850 sixth edition, volume II in the 1844 third edition, and volume III in the 1834 first edition thus. With the armorial bookplate of Rev. Charles Edmund Ruck Keene to each front pastedown. Inscription of C. R. Keene to one title page head. In full calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strips. Light rubbing to back strips, otherwise externally excellent. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Inscription to one title page head. Pages exceptionally bright, with the odd spot to first and last few leaves of volumes. Overall: Near Fine

A superb set of mostly first editions of the novels of R. D. Blackmore, a nice set uncommon to see of the late Victorian's writings. Fourteen works by R. D. Blackmore in thirty-five volumes. Very scarce to see Blackmore's works in a set. Smartly bound in a half morocco binding by W. J. Mansell. This smart set includes almost the complete works of Blackmore. Blackmore was one of the most famous novelists of the second half of the nineteenth century, best remember today for his 'Lorna Doone'. This set includes; 'Clara Vaughan', complete in three volumes, published in 1864. The very scarce first edition. Half-title is present to each volume. Original publisher's cloth bound in the rear of each volume. Two pages of adverts to the rear of Volume III. 'Cradock Nowell', complete in three volumes, published in 1866. The uncommon first edition. 'The Maid of Sker', complete in three volumes, published in 1872. The very scarce first edition. Half-title is present to each volume. 'Alice Lorraine', incomplete in two volumes, being Volumes II and III of a total of III volumes, thus lacking Volume I. Published in 1875.
