About the Item

8 of 10 volumes (2-7 and 9-10) Chambers's Miscellany of Instructive & Entertaining Tracts New and Revised Edition, printed 1872 by W. & R. Chambers, Edinburgh. Uniformly bound in half calf with marbled boards. Leather spines have blind and gilt tooling, raised bands, titles in gilt. Internally, marbled endpapers, no inscriptions, each volume with an engraved title page and numerous illustrations within text. Chambers's Miscellany has been considered by academicians and scholars of great significance and value to literature. Subjects covered include, the romance of geology, the history of the slave trade, Joan of Arc, selections from Elizabethan poets, the life of Peter the Great, William Tell, the life of Nelson and much more. Other topics include anecdotes more biographies, history, curiosities of literature, oddities of human life and character, short and largely factual pieces and with in-text engravings. The first edition of was titled Chambers's Miscellany of Useful and Entertaining Tracts and were 20 vols bound as 10 volumes and printed 1845-47 In the New and Revised Edition, the tracts are revised (mostly shorter), in a different order and with some additional tracts. Dimensions: Each volume 7"h x 4.75"d x 1"w Condition: Good/Fair. Some volumes in better conditions than others. Paper is generally in good condition with a few small areas of sporadic foxing observed. Edges and corners are rubbed and the leather on spines is dry. Text block edges with some fading. For two volumes the back board has separated from the spine. As a group these are very decorative.
