About the Item

The first edition of beloved children's author Lewis Carroll's delightful nonsense poem, with the first issue of his 'An Easter Greeting to Every Child Who Loves "Alice"' tipped in. The first edition, first impression of this work. With 'baker' for 'butcher' to page 83, as called for. Tipped in following the title page is the first edition, first issue of 'An Easter Greeting to Every Child Who Loves "Alice"'. With 'my' in Roman to page 3. This short work is described in W, M, G, 116 as a 'memento of Dodgson's affection for the young readers of his masterpiece', and was tipped in to a small number of copies of 'The Hunting of the Snark', and also 'distributed among his young friends'. 'The Hunting of the Snark', subtitled 'an agony in eight fits', is one of Carroll's better known nonsense poems, telling the story of a ship's crew trying to hunt a creature that always vanishes before it can be caught. It has since been adapted to musicals, operas and plays. With nine plates by Henry Holiday, a British painter, illustrator and sculptor. Holiday was commissioned to illustrate this work in 1874, and remained good friends with Carroll throughout the rest of their lives. Collated, complete. With an advertisement leaf to the rear. With the bookplate of Arthur C Franklin to the front pastedown. A lovely example of this work from the author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Condition In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Back strip a touch age toned. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with small loss of cloth to back strip head. Rear hinge strained, but firmly held. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Tipped in 'Easter Greeting' bright, with light spotting and handling marks to the gutter. Title page significantly age toned. Pages otherwise bright and generally clean, with the odd spot and handling mark, growing more concentrated towards the rear. Overall: Very Good
