1964 The Giving Tree

About the Item

A lovely first impression copy of Shel Silverstein's important and influential children's novel, illustrated by Silverstein throughout, in an early impression dust wrapper. The first edition, first impression of this work, with the four line colophon to the copyright page. The dust wrapper is not the first issue dust wrapper, with the price $2.95 and not $2.50. Thus the dust wrapper is an early issue, possibly the second. In the original clipped dust wrapper, however the price is not clipped. 'The Giving Tree' is a classic American children's fantasy picture book, following the relationship of an apple tree and a young boy who grows into adulthood. Though it was popular when published, this work also garnered a lot of controversy, with people debating whether the relationship between the boy and tree is positive or abusive. There are many different interpretations of the work from the points of view of religion, the environment, mother-child relationships, and friendships. Written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein, complete with illustrations throughout. In the original publisher's paper covered boards, in the original clipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart, with a touch of discolouration to the extremities. A few very light marks to the boards. Dust wrapper is a little edge worn with a few small closed tears. A touch of sunning and light marks to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Prior owner's ink inscription to the half title. Overall: Near Fine

He has photographed a number of Kaffe Fassett's beautiful books. Stuart Jacobson's book was a wonderful discovery. Each page is a story about a gift from one famous person to another. With each story is a photograph of the gift. Steve Lovi's photographs also tell a story. This is a book to be read slowly; one gift at a time. " In the intriguing pages of this strikingly handsome and superbly illustrated book we come close to many of the outstanding personalities of our day - individuals who have achieved renown in the realms of literature, science, art, film, theater, statecraft, finance, fashion, high society. In every case there is the story of a cherished gift, and the text sparkles with anecdotes - romantic, touching, and funny in turn. How could it not, with a cast of characters that includes - to make a random selection - Twiggy and Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Jackie Stewart and Herbert von Karajan, Pope John Paul II and Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida and Shimon Peres, Audrey Hepburn and Marcel Marceau, Anthony Quinn and Giorgio Armani. These are only a fraction of the talented and titled, the brilliant and successful gift givers who fill the pages of The Art Of Giving with romance and sentiment - and history. The author of this book has discovered what should have been obvious: that people's tenderest, most intimate, and most glamorous memories are tied up with gifts that they have given and received." The book includes 235 photographs, including 186 plates in full color. "The Art Of Giving" by Stuart E. Jacobson, Text by Drusilla Beyfus, Photography by Steve Lovi, and Design by John Lynch...
