Antique Japanese Late 19th Century Kimono Textile Swatch Book

About the Item

This is a rare example of a Shima Cho, which is a Kimono textile, fabric swatch book dating from the late 19th century (1876). They were made either as a commercial sample book or as a record of a families own designs and weaves. This book contains 29 pages with 350 fabric samples, mostly in shades of Indigo which were made using vegetable dyes. These textiles were used to make the kimono for the working man and are a thicker more hard wearing fabric than the more formal and ceremonial kimono. It is a remarkable record which would be a great reference to the modern day textile designer.
