For over 30 years, economist and “father of management” Peter Drucker (1909-2005) collected Japanese paintings from the Muromachi thru Edo periods. These valuable works are finally returning to Japan to be exhibited at the Chiba City Museum of Art, along with latest documents detailing Drucker’s collection.
Peter Ferdinand Drucker (1909-2005), the popular American management consultant, educator and writer was also an ardent Japanese art collector who, since his first visit to the country in 1959, gradually amassed a major collection of traditional pieces.
A total of 111 works — mostly rare Muromachi Period (1392-1573) ink paintings — from Drucker’s Sanso Collection have now been brought to the Chiba City Museum for an exhibition that, unlike many other foreign collections, surprisingly does not focus on ukiyo-e prints. Included are the works of esteemed artists such as Kaiho Yusho (1533-1615), Ike no Taiga (1723-1776) and Gyokudo Uragami (1745-1820).
Drucker's books and articles, both scholarly and popular, explored how humans are organized across the business, government, and nonprofit sectors of society. He is one of the best-known and most widely influential thinkers and writers on the subject of management theory and practice. His writings have predicted many of the major developments of the late twentieth century, including privatization and decentralization; the rise of Japan to economic world power; the decisive importance of marketing; and the emergence of the information society with its necessity of lifelong learning.
In 1959, Drucker coined the term "Knowledge worker", and later in his life considered knowledge-worker productivity to be the next frontier of management.
