About the Item
Duke, Charlie and Dotty Duke. Moonwalker. Nashville: Oliver Nelson, 1990. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by Charlie and Dotty Duke on half title page. Original dust jacket and red hardcover boards with gold embossed titles to the spine. With new archival red cloth slipcase
This is a first edition printing of Moonwalker by Charlie Duke, written in conjunction with Dotty Duke. The book was signed and inscribed by both Charlie and Dotty Duke on the half title page in black ink. The inscription reads, "To J. L. Adams, God bless you, Charlie Duke + Dottie Duke." The book was published in 1990 by Oliver Nelson in Nashville, Tennessee.
Moonwalker offers Charles “Charlie” Duke's firsthand account of the events of the Apollo 16 mission. Duke served as Lunar Module Pilot during the mission. Apollo 16 aimed to answer broad questions about the Moon’s surface by inspecting sample materials, conducting experiments, and completing photographic tasks from lunar orbit. In this book, Duke goes into the technical details of the mission, and provides details of his private life and how the mission affected his family.
Duke was a fighter pilot, U.S. Air Force Officer, and astronaut. Duke was known even before he stepped foot on the Moon, as he was employed as a Mission Control specialist in Houston. The world first heard Duke’s distinctive voice during the Apollo 11 Mission: “Roger, Twank...Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We’re breathing again. Thanks a lot!” After Duke piloted the Apollo 16, he stayed with NASA and remained the back-up pilot for Apollo 17. Duke retired in 1976 and earned the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
