About the Item
Hoover, Herbert. The Ordeal of Woodrow Wilson. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1958. Signed and inscribed by Herbert Hoover. Sixth printing. Original dust jacket and housed in a custom slipcase.
This signed copy of Herbert Hoover’s The Ordeal of Woodrow Wilson was published in 1958. The inscription and signature read, “To Betty Wilson, The good wishes of Herbert Hoover.” Published by McGraw-Hill, this book is presented in the original dust jacket and a custom built slipcase.
Hoover’s account of Woodrow Wilson’s critical presidential years remains the only instance of a U.S. president writing a book on another president. Focusing specifically on the years 1915 through 1921, Hoover describes the trials, efforts, and failures of Wilson. Hoover served as Food Administrator and unofficial advisor to Wilson during his time in office sharing his ideas and aspirations. In this book, Hoover provides a unique perspective on wilson’s presidency as he observed and participated in them later experiencing his own trials and hardships throughout his time in office. During the book’s focused time frame events like the sinking of the Lusitania, war loans to Europe, Wilson’s re-election, passing of 18th and 19th Amendments, 14 points speech, push for League of Nations, and the beginning and end of WWI all contributed to the immensely dynamic period. Written about the 28th President of the United States by the 31st President this befitting biography represents a truly inside perspective of an important time in history surrounding an impactful man.
