Pair of 18th-Century Illuminated Mughal or Persian Leaves Featuring a Royal Hunt
About the Item
This report brings together two separate but stylistically linked manuscript leaves, written in Classical Persian (Farsi) with Sufi-inspired texts. Both feature flowing Nasta'liq calligraphy, marginal glosses, and are signed by the same author/copyist. Each leaf features a vividly painted miniature on its reverse, depicting scenes of royal hunting in the Mughal-Persian style.
2. Text Content and Translation:
Both leaves develop deeply spiritual themes related to the Sufi tradition:
The importance of remembrance of God (dhikr) as the light of the heart.
The emptiness of worship without inner presence.
A critique of pretentious religiosity.
The value of applied knowledge and spiritual humility.
Each leaf includes: - Marginal glosses with additional ethical advice and poetic sayings. - Clear signature at the end of the text: - "Written by the sinful servant, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb"
An additional gloss states:
“... the humble, poor, and completely lacking servant, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb,
wrote these leaves with his own hand for the benefit of the brothers on the path of Truth, and not for pride or fame.”
3. Miniatures on the reverse:
Each leaf contains a separate painting:
Leaf 1: Hunting scene in an open field with riders and greyhounds chasing prey. Hierarchy of characters is marked by the clothing and beard of the central protagonist.
Leaf 2: More elaborate scene, on three levels, showing hunting, sacrifice, and celebration.
Female figures and decorated pavilions provide narrative depth.
Common characteristics: - Mineral and plant pigments. - Illuminated frames with floral and geometric motifs. - Estimated dimensions: 40 x 30 cm per sheet.
4. Dating and historical context:
Script: Classical Persian in Nastaʿlīq calligraphy, black and red inks.
Painting technique: Late Persian Mughal painting.
Probable production area: Eastern Iran or Central Asia.
Estimated execution date: ca. 1750–1825.
5. Author Identification:
Both leaves are signed by: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ( (عبدالرحمن بن عبدالوهّاب
He should not be confused with the 18th-century Arab reformer.
His style reveals the profile of a Sufi master or devoted copyist.
His declaration of intent reaffirms the doctrinal and altruistic nature of his work.
6. Conclusion:
These two leaves comprise a work of great historical and spiritual interest. They represent the fusion of Islamic calligraphy, Sufi thought, and Persian court painting. Their condition, content, signature, and visual beauty make them ideal pieces for collectors, museums, or institutions dedicated to Islamic and Eastern culture.
