About the Item

Cohen, Leonard. Stranger Music: Selected Poems and Songs. Toronto: McClellan & Stewart, Inc., 1993. First edition. Rebound with full leather boards, gilt tooling, gilt titles, and raised bands to spine. Paired with "Paris Again" lithographic print, signed by Cohen in ink. Book and print are presented together in a matching custom 1/4 leather and cloth clamshell case. Presented is a first edition printing of Leonard Cohen’s Stranger Music. Published in 1993 by McClellan & Stewart in Toronto, the book is presented rebound in full leather boards, with gilt tooling, gilt titles, and raised bands to the spine, and gilt tooled borders to the front and back boards. Stranger Music presents a magnificent cross-section of Cohen's work, including the legendary songs "Suzanne," "Sisters of Mercy," "Bird on a Wire," "Famous Blue Raincoat," "I'm Your Man," and "The Future", paired with selections from his earlier books Flowers for Hitler, Beautiful Losers, and Death of a Lady's Man. It also features eleven previously unpublished poems. Paired with this beautifully bound first edition of Stranger Music is a lithographic print of “Paris Again,” signed by Leonard Cohen. This collectible pairing demonstrates that Cohen is a writer of intelligence and a creative force who transcends genres. “A massive record of the poet's imaginative journey, through beauty, through horror, through the extremes of love and despair, from the deepest abyss of self-abnegation to the rare and necessary moments of ecstasy. The language ranges from the exquisitely beautiful to the darkly obscene, from the romantically inspired to the ironically banal... A poetic record like no other” (Toronto Star.) Leonard Cohen’s artistic career began in 1956 with the publication of his first book of poetry, Let Us Compare Mythologies. He has published two novels, The Favourite Game and Beautiful Losers, and eleven books of poetry, most recently Stranger Music: Selected Poems and Songs, Book of Longing, and Leonard Cohen: Poems and Songs. He released fourteen studio albums, with his final album, “You Want It Darker,” released in 2016. Cohen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, and was awarded the Glenn Gould Prize in 2011. This beautiful edition demonstrates the range and depth of Cohen’s genius, revealing an extraordinary artistic gift that spans music, the written word, and art. CONDITION: Very good condition. Rebound in full leather boards, with gilt tooling, gilt titles, and raised bands to the spine, and gilt tooled borders to the front and back boards. Paper is healthy, with clean pages without marks or tears. Paired with a color lithographic print of “Paris Again,” signed by Leonard Cohen in black ink in the bottom right margin. Color is vibrant and the ink signature is legible, without smears or fading. Book and print are presented together in a custom 1/4 leather and cloth clamshell case, with gilt titles and raised bands to the spine, and an inlaid photograph portrait of Leonard Cohen on the front. The lithographic print is held in place by protective corners, on the interior of the clamshell. Accompanied by our company's letter of authenticity.
