Howells, William Dean Venetian Life; With Illustrations from Original Watercolors Boston: Houghton Mifflin, The Riverside Press, 1892. 2 volumes, 8vo 7 x 4 3/4 inches (172 x 120 mm); viii, 279 pp; 287 pp. 18 illustrations from watercolors by Childe Hassam, Ross Turner, F. Hopkinson Smith, and Rhoda Holmes Nicholls, with captioned tissue guards. Bound in tan calf with gilt fillets on boards, maroon morocco title labels on spine, raised bands, elaborate floral motifs in compartments, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., red silk ribbon page markers. A lovely set in an elegant binding of Howell's firsthand accounts of life in Venice, including festivals, society, entertainment, art and architecture where he was the O.S. Consul from 1861 to 1865. Venetian Life was first published in London in 1866 and had subsequent illustrated editions, this one with the reproductions of watercolors by Childe Hassam, et. al. William Dean Howells (1837 – 1920) was an American realist novelist, literary critic, and playwright, nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters". He was particularly known for his tenure as editor of The Atlantic Monthly, and the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day," which was adapted into a 1996 film of the same name. Condition: Very Good +.
