About the Item

Chapman and Hall Ltd., London, Limited Edition of 750 A substantial collection of The Works of Charles Dickens in the scarce National Edition, published in London by Chapman and Hall Ltd. in 1907. This edition was limited to only 750 sets for England and America, each printed on high-quality paper and illustrated with engravings by artists including George Cruikshank and others. This offering includes thirty volumes from the series: Vols. I–VII, X–XVII, and XXII–XXXVI, bound in publisher’s green cloth with elaborate gilt-stamped decoration to the spines and covers. Each volume measures 9.25"h x 6.75"w. Condition: Fair to Poor overall: covers with fading, stains, and shelf wear; fraying and chipping to cloth at edges; some spines partially detached or split; bindings remain sound. One volume bears a gift inscription (Vol. XXXV), and a bookseller’s stamp appears on rear endpapers. Provenance: From a private collection at 3 East 71st Street, New York City. Notes: This edition was issued in a limited run, prized for its completeness, illustrations, and readability. Sets are now increasingly scarce on the market, especially in original publisher’s cloth bindings. The complete National Edition of Charles Dickens (Chapman & Hall, 1906–1908) was issued in 36 volumes. This set includes 30 volumes (I–VII, X–XVII, XXII–XXXVI), and is missing 6 volumes (VIII, IX, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXI).
