19th Century Moroccan Brass Hanukkah Lamp

About the Item

Hand hammed and hand engraved brass Hanukkah lamp, Morrocco, 19th century stands with oil fonts with pinched spouts attached to the back plate. Hand cut decoration in the shape of leaves shows hammered brass sheets engraved to showcase the Ten Commandments, with distinguished arches. Above the Ten Commandments curves an archway with an engraved name of owner, "Rafael Mouriciano." Adorned with detail is decoration of three Star of David's. The Hanukkah lamp commemorates the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, shamash serves as a help candle used to light the others from right to left. The Temple’s menorah, one of its most important ritual objects, burning for one day instead, the flame stayed alight for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be found, which made this the basis for the festival of lights celebration of Hanukkah. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a Lifetime “Certificate of Authenticity” and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.

Brass Hanukkah lamp Menorah, Poland, circa 1810. Cast in Bench form, on four feet. The backplate is cast and pierced featuring scrollwork. This lamp was made by the technique known as "sand casting". This process begins with a wooden mold that was carved out to create negative space, which in turn is used to make the inverse form or shape to be used for the casting of metal. The mold is pressed into fine sand mixed with clay, then removed, and molten brass poured into the impression.
