Each of these pointed slippers, crafted of beautifully embroidered silk, were shaped to resemble a lotus bud and enhanced the diminutive shape of bound feet. A practice that began in the Tang dynasty and reached the height of its popularity during the Qing dynasty, foot binding was a painful process intended to make a woman's feet as small as possible by restricting bone growth from an early age. The smaller the feet the more attractive and erotic they were, giving elite women a mark of elegance and a distinctive - albeit tortured - gait of small, light steps. 1812 "United States of Nth America -- Carte des Etats-Unis De L'Amerique Septentrionale" Two-Sheet Map by Tardieu
This attractive map, published in Paris in 1812, is one of the most rare large format maps from the period. It features a view of the East Coast of the U.S. from Maryland to just below South Carolina. Additionally, Ellicott’s plan for the City of Washington D.C. is included at the top right and an illustration of Niagara Falls is shown at the bottom right with a description in both French and English. This extremely detailed map not only depicts the mountainous regions of the southeastern U.S., but also includes names of regions, rivers, and towns.
Based on the first state of Arrowsmith’s 4-sheet map of the United States, this map is completely engraved by Tardieu in Paris and showcases high quality engravings. This detailed map of the recently independent United States includes one of the largest and earliest examples of the Ellicott plan of Washington DC.

Presented is an 1894 signed first edition goupil-gravure print by Heywood Hardy (1842-1933). The engraving was printed in Paris and published by Boussod Valadon & Co. Publishers, the successors to Goupil & Co. Designed as a companion to After the Drive, Hardy’s On the Moors (Dogging) depicts three hunters and their two dogs hunting ducks. The youngest of the three men is shooting his gun as the dogs excitedly wait to chase after the bird. This print is one of only 75 artist’s proofs and has been signed by the artist in pencil at the lower left corner of the print’s margin.
Hunting has a long history in England and is considered a very traditional activity even today. One of the most popular forms of hunting is called “wildfowling” and targets wild geese and ducks.
