English Baron’s Coronet for the 1911 Coronation of King George V

About the Item

Once worn by an English baron at Westminster Abbey during the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. Comprised of a lush crimson velvet CAP, ermine border, gilt gold tassel and silver ornamentations, this luxurious coronet is a royal symbol of nobility heralding the noble Peerage and rank of baron in the English court system. Traditionally, a baron’s coronet bears six silver “pearls” around the rim, which are equally spaced and balanced in height and size. These headpieces were designed to only be worn ceremonially at coronations of new monarchs, but a similar shape is mimicked in royal English heraldry, wherein the baron's coronet is depicted with four visible “pearls.” These heraldic coronets often appeared in the coats of arms of Britain’s barons. English monarchs King George V and Queen Mary were crowned as the King and Queen of the United Kingdom and Great British Empire on June 22, 1911 at Westminster Abbey in London. The early 20th century coronation would be the last royal event to take place before the outbreak of World War I, and the last with attendance from royal representatives of continental European and Russian empires, many of which would no longer exist after the conclusion of the Great War in 1918. Royal representatives from British-colonized nations in Africa, Asia and the Middle East comprising the Great British Empire, including several maharajas of India, were also royal guests of King George V’s coronation. After the historic event, 45,000 soldiers and sailors from across the British Empire participated in the royal procession and lined the route. When the coronation procession concluded, the newly crowned King and Queen appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, creating such excitement that the soldiers outside the palace broke ranks and joined civilians in cheering. According to one account, "some of them put their helmets on their rifles and waved them vigorously aloft." That evening, Central London’s principal buildings were illuminated with strings of electric lights until 12:30 a.m. The crown is hallmarked for the 1911 coronation and is mounted in a refined wooden and glass display box.
