Unusual Crystal Palace Band Competition Painted Glass Certificate of Merit 1883

About the Item

A very unusual, possibly unique, historical Certificate of Merit awarded at the drum and pipe band contest held at Crystal Palace between 1880 and 1883 and awarded in 1883. The certificate is hand-painted on a rectangular sheet of milk glass and is painted as a hanging cloth banner tied between two flowering branches. A ribbon banner above reads BAND STAR DRUM & FIFE BAND HOPE with two painted medallions one decorated with a collection of instruments and reading ‘BAND OF HOPE UNION FETE AT THE CRYSTAL PALACE JULY 30 1830’. The other medallion shows the Crystal Palace and reads ‘SECOND GOOD TEMPLAR FETE HELD AT CRYSTAL PALACE JULY 12 1881’. A banner between the two medallions reads ‘Certificate of Merit’ with the cloth banner reading ‘This is to Certify that George Dunn was a Member of the above Band which gained First Prize at the Crystal Palace Contest 13th July 1880, and Second Prize 12th July 1881, and First Prize 10th July 1883. John Alfred Butcher … Band Master. Charles Tanner … Secretary.’ The plaque is further decorated with musical instruments and a music score. An interesting piece of music history. Provenance: acquired from the British Art market. In good condition with a couple of stable small chips to two corners.
