Us patent tammany mechanical cast iron saving bank, 1875

About the Item

American mechanical piggy bank TAMMANY BANK called "The fat man". Plychrome cast iron, the right arm and the movable head so that the "fat man" puts the piece in his room while nodding. Produced in 1875 by the firm J and E. Stevens & Co, patent dated "December 23, 1873" on the back. Usual wear to the original polychromy. Note: The fat man is said to be a caricature of William Tweed, known as "Boss Tweed", an American politician of Scottish-Irish origin, leader of Tammany Hall, a Democratic Party who played a major role in the political history of New York in the 19th century. century. He is indicted and imprisoned for embezzling millions of dollars from the city's budget through a vast corruption scheme. This saving bank has it's original painting and has no repaints, aged patina

The Pelican Mechanical Bank is made of cast iron and was manufactured by The J. & E. Steven's Manufacturing Company, in Cromwell, Connecticut in 1878. It was, however, created by John Gerard of the Trenton Lock & Hardware Company in Trenton, New Jersey. This is probably the best example I've had for sale and is in excellent all original condition and paint.
