Bellin 18th Century Hand Colored Map of "L'isle de Sainte Lucie" 'St. Lucia'

About the Item

Jacques Bellin's map of the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia entitled "Carte de L'isle de Sainte Lucie", published in Paris in 1764. The West Indies island of Saint Lucia is part of the arc of the Windward Islands, in the Lesser Antilles. It neighbors the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados and to the north, Martinique. Located on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea, it is bordered to the west by the Caribbean Sea and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean itself. Two of the peaks of Saint Lucia are part of the volcanic chain of the Qualibou, also called Soufriere, the main volcano of the island. The map is displayed in a unique and expensive Lucite slip case frame and a cream-colored mat. There is a central vertical fold, as issued. The map is in excellent condition. Provenance: Thomas J. Perkins, San Francisco, and Belvedere, CA, Co-Founder Kleiner Perkins Venture Capital, Board of Directors HP, Genentech, Compaq, Applied Materials, Corning Glass. He was a devoted sailor, having owned the largest privately owned sailing yacht in the world, the Maltese Falcon. He undoubtedly sailed the West Indies and presumably was quite familiar with St. Lucia. Another Bellin map of the Island of St. Kitts is available on 1stDibs, Reference: LU5206220651362. It is framed with an identical Lucite frame and a white mat. These two maps would make a striking display grouping. A 20% discount is available for the purchase of both maps. The map was prepared by Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772), who was one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century. He served for a number of years as map and chart maker, as well hydrographer to the King of France.
