About the Item

Antique View of Vienna – Engraving by T. Coleman for Middleton’s Geography, c.1777 This finely detailed 18th-century copperplate engraving presents a panoramic view of Vienna, then one of the great imperial cities of Europe. Entitled “A View of the City of Vienna, the Capital of Germany,” the print was engraved by T. Coleman for Middleton’s Complete System of Geography, an ambitious multi-volume work first published in London around 1777. The view shows Vienna from across the River Danube, its skyline crowded with church spires and crowned by the imposing Gothic tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Below the city walls, small boats navigate the river while figures and carriages animate the foreground landscape. Coleman’s engraving skillfully balances topographical precision with decorative charm, using fine hatching and crisp linework to evoke depth and atmosphere. During this period, English engravings of major European capitals were in high demand, serving both as educational illustrations and as decorative souvenirs for the growing class of travelers and scholars interested in world geography. Middleton’s Geography was among the most comprehensive such compilations of the late 18th century, featuring numerous city prospects and maps engraved by leading London craftsmen. This view of Vienna captures the city’s character at the height of the Habsburg era, before its 19th-century transformation. It offers collectors of early topographical prints a vivid window into the appearance and imagination of Central Europe in the Age of Enlightenment. Condition: Good impression on laid paper with visible plate mark. Light overall toning and minor edge wear consistent with age. Verso blank. Framing tips: A dark walnut or ebonized wood frame with an ivory or cream mat will emphasize the engraving’s contrast and architectural detail. A thin gilt inner line can enhance its period elegance.
