About the Item

Miniature Shoe with Floral Ornament Origin: France or Belgium Material: Gilt bronze Date: Late 19th century (c. 1880–1900) Dimensions: H × W × D: approx. 4.2 × 8.5 × 3.5 cm Description: Finely cast miniature shoe made of gilt bronze, inspired by a late Baroque ladies’ shoe with pointed toe and gracefully curved heel. A raised floral ornament with two layered blossoms and relief-carved leaves decorates the instep. The surface treatment is varied: the upper part of the shoe shows a subtly stippled texture, while the sole and heel are smoothly finished. The interior is polished with slight traces of use. Interesting Facts: This decorative piece belongs to the category of so-called objets de vitrine, which were especially popular in France during the Belle Époque. The miniature scale, historicizing design, and naturalistic decoration reflect the representational culture of the late 19th century. Shoes of this type were often used as ornamental objects, jewelry containers, or souvenirs—frequently crafted with great attention to detail. The design of this example echoes courtly ladies' footwear of the 18th century and exemplifies the nostalgic eclecticism characteristic of around 1900. Condition: Gilding partially rubbed, especially along the edges of the floral ornament and toe. Minor age-related scratches and a fine patina. Solid casting quality, no losses or fractures.
