Georgian Oak Miniature Chest of Drawers
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
An extremely attractive and very good quality late 18th century, Georgian, oak miniature chest, having well figured rectangular top, over two short and three long drawers retaining original turned wooden knobs, flanked by elegant half turned columns, raised on elegant original shaped bracket feet.
A beautifully charming little piece of 18th century miniature furniture, constructed from rich, warm oak timbers which retain an exceptional colour and patina, it boasts original handles and feet. Almost certainly it was made as a sample piece of furniture originally.
There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesman...

Georgian Mahogany Miniature Chest
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Good Quality And Charming Early 19th Century Mahogany Miniature Chest, Having Well Figured Top Over Three Long Drawers With Original Brass Knobs And Boxwood Inlaid Escutcheons, Over Elegant Shaped Apron With Original Splayed Bracket Feet.
There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models but a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts.
We believe that this particular little Georgian Miniature Chest was probably made as an apprentice piece, due to the relative simplicity of it, combined with the exceptional execution, which maybe suggests that somebody was very much trying to impress somebody else. It is also slightly unusual in form, which again suggests it was made more as a one off item with a specific purpose, as opposed to a scale model of other items.
It is certainly a charming piece of antique miniature furniture...

An Extremely Attractive And Particularly Charming Mid 18th Century, Georgian Mahogany Miniature Chest, Retaining Exceptional Untouched Colour And Patina Throughout, Having Two Short And Three Long Drawers, Retaining Original Brass Ring Handles, Raised On Original Shaped Bracket Feet.
Although there has always been a large amount of discussion and conjecture as to the original purpose of antique miniature furniture it will be almost impossoble for a definitive answer to be given for by far the majority of surviving pieces.
The two well known and accepted purposes were either as an apprentice piece, meaning that the item may well have been made by a hopeful young man looking to secure himself a job at the local cabinet making workshop and using the piece as an audition for entry, or alternatively as a travelling salesmans sample piece where scale models of the full size items which a workshop could produce were created, allowing the salesman to take them away and use them for taking orders.
We believe that this wonderful little antique miniature chest...

Georgian Mahogany Miniature Linen Press
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A charming early 19th century Georgian Mahogany Miniature Linen press having elegant swan neck pediment over pair of well figured line inlaid doors enclosing original fitted interior with two banks of six drawers flanking central recessed mirror, over two short and three long drawers retaining original turned wooden knobs raised on elegant splayed bracket feet with shaped apron.
Often much debate is had as to whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who is looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few articles were made as scale models in advance of a road trip during which the salesman would travel the country showing prospective clients the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and take orders from.
This particular piece would definitely have been made as a sample piece. The construction is exquisite and the attention to tiny detail phenomenal in all honesty. It is also quite clearly effectively a scale model of a full size linen...

English Pocket Globe by Lane, London, between 1817 and 1833
By Lane's
Located in Milano, IT
Pocket Globe
Lane, London, between 1817 and 1833
The globe is contained in its original case covered with black leather.
Diameter: globe 2.75 in (7 cm); case 3.26 in (8.3 cm).
Weight: 0.28 lb (128 g)
State of conservation: almost excellent. It has some slight abrasions and some signs of use.
The globe is made up of twelve printed paper gores aligned and glued to the sphere. Two pins are inserted on the poles.
In the North Pacific Ocean, above the Tropic of Cancer, the globe bears a cartouche with the inscription:
LANE’S
Improved
GLOBE
LONDON
and, under cartouche
J. Mynde Sc[ulpsit]
On the globe, much of central Africa is empty and the great lakes Tanganyika and Victoria are not marked (Europeans would begin to explore the area after 1858). Australia is still called New Holland (the new name would be introduced in 1829); Tasmania is listed as an island (Matthew Flinders circumnavigates it in 1798). The routes of Cook's and Anson's various voyages are plotted; on the island of Sandwich, between Guinea and Mexico, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the place and date of Cook's killing are reported.
The antipode of London is marked in the south of New Zealand.
The pocket globe was made between 1817 and 1833.
The reconstruction of the history of this dating is due to Elly Dekker (E., Dekker, Globes at Greenwich, Oxford 1999, pp. 128-129).
Around 1757 James Ferguson...
