"Cavalier Disc" wooden horn gramophone 1900s phonograph for HMV Decca RCA Victor

About the Item

THE CAVALIER DISC TALKING MACHINE by B B & CO., London Vintage horn gramophone, early 20th Century. This is a really stunning early 20th Century gramophone by the recognised manufacturer B.B. & Co., of London, produced probably between around 1905 to 1910. Super-rare, and it is unlikely to find another! Good vintage condition, beautiful wooden horn, fully usable, working and sounding excellent. Original period soundbox that came with the gramophone. Badge to front “THE CAVALIER DISC TALKING MACHINE, B.B. & Co. London” This has presumably had the motor replaced at some (historic) stage in its life – evident from the additional winder hole on the right-hand side. The motor is stamped “SWISS MADE”. The horn has a few minor imperfections, as can be seen on the photos, but overall impression is excellent. The case has various marks and scratches, notably where the needle has scraped the wood. There is slight bowing to the top panel. Metal parts have some tarnish. Felt could be replaced at some stage. The base underside has had a piece of hardboard added - not visible unless you open the lid to access the motor. All the moving components appear good and greased where appropriate. The motor runs smoothly and regularly and the platter is level. There are no irritating rumbles or other noises. I have not carried out any service or maintenance work, but it appears to have been well maintained. Records can play fully with little or no additional winding. Sound is excellent. Dimensions (approx.): Total: W 60cm, D 66 cm; H 79 cm; Wt 7.3 kg; Horn: L 52.5 cm (excl. bracket), Diam. 60 cm, Wt < 1kg; Base cabinet: W 38.5 cm, D 38 (44.5 incl. bracket) cm, H 20 cm, Wt 6.5 kg
