Chinoiserie Grand Piano by Rogers and Sons London
The grand piano was manufactured according to the device number 1930.
The grand piano was sold in 1932 by Harrods London to a lady who wanted to use the beautiful musical instrument to motivate her son to learn to play the piano.
This is what I was researched into. We were able to buy the grand piano five years ago and restored the surface in our workshop and polished it by hand with a ball of shellac.
The instrument was restored from the ground up by a subcontractor of the Steinway company.
The soundboard was replaced, the sound post, pegs, the axles, all the felt, the strings were all completely overhauled or replaced,
the bass strings were spun by hand according to the latest findings. Everything was done very professionally according to the Carta!
Exact descriptions of the work are on the invoice.
The Chinoiserie paintings on the grand piano depict the fairy tale of a poor fisherman's son who falls in love with a princess. However, her father rejects the poor fisherman, saying that he will only become something if he wants to marry his daughter. The young man goes out into the world and works his way up. The painted scenes on the grand piano show his path. When he returns, he is a high-ranking official at the imperial court. Now there is a grandiose wedding, which is depicted on the music stand. On the lid of the piano is the last scene in which the couple sits together on a bench in old age and enjoys their time together. He is wearing the magnificent robes of a minister at the imperial court.
The boat on top of the lid probably symbolizes the journey into eternity -
And if they have not died, they are still alive today.
The instrument is a rarity; there are grand pianos that actually do show chinoiserie, but only here and there as decoration.
There is no comparable instrument that tells a whole story, a wonderful fairy tale.
