An Impressively Large Victorian Carved Oak Floor Standing Dinner Gong

About the Item

An impressively large 19th Century carved oak floor-standing dinner gong and striker. British - Circa 1880. Raised on hand carved intertwined mythical beasts, the bronze gong being on a shaped plinth with ball and claw feet. The bronze gong shows lovely patination and hand-beaten charm, and is stamped Burmese. The metal gong itself would have been imported from Asia by UK furniture manufacturers at the time. The striker is a later replacement to match, and the leather holding the gong has also been replaced. The stand is very sturdy with no loose joints. There is a small historic damage to a scrolled area, please refer to photograph number 13. The underside looks like it has had metal brackets added to strengthen the feet. These are not on show when in situ. One of the best floor standing gongs we have seen. As you can imagine, this makes a wonderful sound! The gong has a Celtic feel, possibly Scottish in origin.
