About the Item

Metronome system Paquet 1815 and Johan Maelzel 1846 from the second half of the 19th century. Measurements 11x11x23.5 cm - 4.3x4.3x9.3. The last photo is the gift box. This is an oak wood instrument used to measure the tempo of music, the sound of the pendulum accurately signals the speed of performance. The instrument consists of a pendulum with a counterweight that works with a clockwork mechanism with gear wheels moved by a spring. The rod placed on the front fitted with a counterweight is operated by the clockwork mechanism whose oscillations mark the passage of time. The instrument is housed in an oak pyramid-shaped box that bears a brass plaque on the front and the names of Paquet 1815 and the inventor the Austrian physicist J.N. Maelezel 1846. Philippe-Nicolas Paquet was born in 1823; he settled in Paris, where he worked for the Maelzel Metronome company; upon the death of Johann Nepomuk Maelzel he then took over management of the factory and in 1867 established a new small machine tool and metronome manufacturing plant in Beaumont Sur Oise. The Beaumont plant remained in production until 1983. Among the first to use this type of instrument was Ludwing van Beethoven.
