Scale model made in the 1950s of a 15th-century Spanish galleon

About the Item

Scale model made in the 1950s of a 15th-century Spanish galleon. Planked hull, 3 masts with sails and 23 guns. Measurements 56x10x42.5 inche 22x3.9x16.8 cm The Galleon was a mighty warship, widespread between the 15th and 17th centuries, designed and built to cope with long ocean voyages. The Galleon was the result of maritime evolution and progress, originating initially from the caravel and then the carrack, with the purpose of having a faster and more maneuverable ship; it was generally about 40 meters long and 10 meters wide. Unlike the ships of the time, the Galleon was designed to make long ocean voyages with innovations that allowed for greater stability and better wind resistance, resulting in a ship that was faster and easier to maneuver than its predecessors. Bow castles were not eliminated despite the fact that they complicated navigation as they were very effective during military operations making defense against boardings more efficient. The Galleon had the advantage of cheaper construction costs than other ships, and the maneuvering system was greatly improved in order to be able to steer the ship with a smaller crew, as many sailors perished during the long times spent at sea due to poor hygienic and safety conditions. Building a Galleon was a time-consuming and labor-intensive undertaking, so groups and societies of wealthy people pooled their funds.
