Israeli Silver Hanukkah Lamp by Arie Ofir, 1985

About the Item

Israeli silver hanukkah lamp by Arie Ofir features nine balls supported by a zig zag base. The stunning silver Hanukkah lamp is for use with oil and candle wicks. Signed and stamped by Arie Ofir with silver hallmarks are seen. The Hanukkah lamp commemorates the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, shamash, serves as a help candle used to light the others from right to left. The Temple’s menorah, one of its most important ritual objects, burning for one day instead, the flame stayed alight for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be found, which made this the basis for the festival of lights celebration of Hanukkah. Artist and Professor Arie Ofir was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1939. He graduated from the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem 1964 and continued studying with the renowned silversmith D.H. Gumble. He studied two more years at “George Jensen” in Copenhagen with a scholarship from the Danish ministry of education. Ofir’s work of art have been displayed in many well-known museums, including the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, The Victoria & Albert Museum in London, The Jewish Museums in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a lifetime “Certificate of Authenticity” and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.
