About the Item

Unique hand carved and gilt church statue of a female Saint. Over the decades we have owned and sold a few top quality carved church relics and this statue of a female Saint is one of the oldest to date. For a church sculpture of this age to still have a lot of the polychrome painting and gilding too is rather rare. Even with part of her right forearm and hand missing, this female Saint from the late 1700s or very early 1800s is an exceptional work of art. Unfortunately, we don't know who this Saint is and therefor we will drop the price significantly. Very often Saints are recognized by what they are holding, but since the one hand is missing we don't have any clues to work with. The pose of this female Saint is rather special and we expected to be able to find out more about her because of that pose, but to no avail. She looks belligerent or resolute and strong minded to say the least. Another great feature is ofcourse her large size and since she is entirely hand carved out of solid oak, she also is no lightweight and she stands as strong and stable as the day she was hand-carved. The rounded base on the backside and the remains of an antique, hand-forged wrought iron nail between the shoulder blades, tell us that this sculpture would have been on display / mounted on a church column. We feel this European work of religious art is either French or Flemmish. Thanks to its size, quality, beauty and ancient patina this remarkable and highly decorative sculpture is a real eyecatcher and an absolute joy to own and look at. She will look amazing, no matter where you decide to have her on display and she is a great talking piece (especially if you DO know who she is).
