Leather & Bronzed Metal Gothic Revival Photo Album w. Gilt Pages Antique Photos
Located in Lisse, NL
Antique and very rare Gothic photo book filled with French photos from circa 1860-1880. Over the decades we have bought and sold many Gothic Revival antiques from almost all the centuries since Gothic pieces have been around. This however is the first time that we ever found a pure Gothic photo album. This hand-crafted album dates from circa 1870-1890 and some of the antique photos are even older. The most eyecatching features (when this album is closed) are ofcourse the large, bronzed metal, Gothic hinges and they even still open and close perfectly on the side where this album closes and opens. Another great feature is the embossed leather Gothic decoration on the spine of this rare antique. It includes two Gothic trefoil symbols for the trinity, making this rare antique also a meaningful one. The guilded outsides of the pages makes it resemble the outsides of many large antique bibles and the multitude of photos inside (many Parisian) are images that tell part of the story of what life was like (for the well to do) in the mid 1800s in France. Besides the clothes and furniture, the facial expressions also have a story to tell. If you have an eye for those things then this Gothic album...

The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, Illustrated, 1885
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, Translated out of The Original Tongues, and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised; with Concordance and Psalms of David in Metre. The Text Conformable to the Oxford and the American Bible Society’s Standard Editions. Philadelphia: National Publishing Co., 1885. Standard Edition. Illustrated. Large quarto, with original full leather carved and gilded boards. Gilded edges. Presented with a custom-made archival clamshell box. Presented is a beautifully restored and exquisitely bound Holy Bible from 1885. This family bible was published by National Publishing Company, in Philadelphia. The bible contains both the Old and New Testaments, and the Apocrypha, with “text conformable to the Oxford and the American Bible Society’s Standard Editions.” It features a “History of the Religious Denominations of the World, both Ancient and Modern” compiled by Reverend H.D. Northrup, D.D., as well as a “Comprehensive and Critical History of the Books of the Holy Bible” compiled “expressly for this edition from the writings of William Smith, L.L.D.” It is decorated with a stunning full color title page, both color and black and white illustrations throughout, and three maps. It also contains its original family pages. This bible was produced as a family bible, to be handed down through a family with each successive generation. Family bibles were used as a marker of each married couple’s journey through life and the family’s history was commonly recorded in the bible. This bible features its original pages for presentation, births, deaths, and marriages, as well as a page for swearing temperance. The family pages of this bible are blank, and could still be filled in and used as originally intended by whoever purchases this bible. Family bibles, often very large and elaborately decorated, first came into popularity during the Victorian era in the United Kingdom. Afterwards, the family bible was seen throughout Europe and eventually made its way into American households. This bible’s period binding is exquisite, with full brown leather boards stamped with intricate gilt floral and leaf details. The front board features a deeply carved title border with gilt lettering and intricate gilt tooling and blind embossing. The spine has gilt stamped titles and raised bands. The advent of the printing press encouraged the craft of books that the small, literate class valued as works of art. Intricately bound books fell out of style in the late 18th century, but in the late 19th century, a resurgence of sumptuously bound special editions of bibles, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and poetry countered the popularity of cheaper, popular dime novels. Several publishers sought to elevate the book back to a piece of artistry that would be cherished for generations to come, and used expensive leathers, handmade marbled boards, gilt details, metal clasps, and gauffered edges to do so. This is one such example of the book artistry created during that time. CONDITION: Very good condition. Quarto. Original full brown leather, with front and back boards carved with gilt tooling and accents. The spine has raised bands, gilt titles, and tooling. Gilded edges. Illustrated throughout, with black and white steel engravings and full color illustrations. Blank family pages, to include a presentation page, births, deaths, marriages, and temperance. Three maps, “A New Map of Palestine or the Holy Land,” “Ancient Jerusalem...

20th Century Italian Handled Almsgiver Basket with Silver and Stones Elemens
By Alexandre Stefani
Located in Milan, IT
An Italian straw work basket shaped hand bag from Bologna, a fantastic, typical and rare almoner basket used by Italian religious for charity purposes to collect begging. Decorated all over with intricately patterned straw covered case, a braided straw on an oval wooden structure. The oval wooden lid features a detailed repoussé silver layer decorated with scrolls and vegetal motifs and centered by a green precious stone. Silver hanlde is coated with leather and decorated by applied repoussé silver floaral elements and topped by a precious stone. Red lining inside. Silver elements are marked 800 and are realized by Stefani silvermaker from Bologna in the Mid-20th Century. The attribution to the silversmith Enea and Alessandro Stefani was mademade for similar artworks on the antiques market. Handmade in Italy, in Bologna, Emilia Romagna region, dating back to the first decade of 19th century, this oval shaped, hand-realized lidded almoner with arched handle was once used as hand-bag for begging and can be used nowadays for sewing, weaving or knitting works. Finely repoussé silver flowers are applied on the whole oval body of this straw basket. This basket is wonderful as a decorative object or an unusual storage solution. Bag basket making is an ancient and humble craft, but in the hands of a skilled artisan a simple basket can become a truly beautiful work of art. In good condition, with working lock and key on the lid. In overall good condition, minor signes of wear consistent with use and age, the lid shows a small cracking in the internal wooden cover. see closed up picture. A lovely antique Italian handmade box for collectors. Listed height of 42 cm refers to hanle's height - 26 cm is just the basket height. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago requires a governative license for export called Belle Arti. The shipping may require additional 2-3 handling weeks to require and get the license according to the final destination of the artwork. The historic Stefani silverware was founded in Bologna in the early 1900s by Enea Stefani, who had learned the art of the silversmith at another historic Bolognese reality, the Zanetti workshop. In 1920 Enea Stefani inaugurated his workshop in Via Clavature, which will be the headquarters of the famous company until it definitively closes in 2015. First Enea and his son Alessandro then produce works of the highest quality, sometimes true masterpieces, working the silver with the ancient techniques of chiselling, embossing, engraving, wax casting, enriching their creations with semi-precious stones and high-fire enamels. The great mastery in the workmanship is combined with an aesthetic research and a poetic vein, especially in Alessandro, who succeeds his father in 1974, and who also signs numbered specimens, which lead to the creation of splendid pieces, such as candlesticks, rocaille-style double , cutlery, centrepieces, masgalani-silver basins...
