Mid-20th Century Brutalist Iron Hanukkah Lamp by David Palombo

About the Item

An impressive hand forged Hanukkah lamp inspired by Brutalist aesthetic. Hand crafted in Jerusalem, Israel circa 1960, the iron lamp stands with nine rustic candleholders. The shamash stands tallest in stature with uniquely minimalistic and raw characteristics, highlighting the relationship of texturally organic materials. The shamash stands tallest, unadorned yet simplistic. Each candleholder is shaped to create a dense mannerism with support by sturdy iron bases of different tiers. The supportive structure of the iron base below, ensures its upright appearance. The Hanukkah lamp commemorates the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, shamash, is a help candle used to light the others from right to left. The Temple’s menorah, one of its most important ritual objects, burning for one day instead, the flame stayed alight for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be found, which made this the basis for the festival of lights celebration of Hanukkah. David Palombo (1920-1966) was a sculptor and painter born in Turkey and immigrated to Israel with his parents in 1923. In 1940 he began his studies at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, and from 1942 was a student of sculptor Ze’ev Ben-Zvi. For a period of time, Palombo was an assistant at Ben-Zvi’s studio and later taught at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Palombo’s known works include the memorial building gates to Yad Vashem (1960) and the gates to the Knesset. The latter were created shortly before his premature death, caused by a motorcycle accident in which Palombo hit a chain used to block off the entrance of a Haredi neighborhood of Yamin Moshe, on the eve of Shabbat.
