About the Item

A beautiful example of mid-20th century Jerusalem craftsmanship, this hand-carved Esther Scroll case is fashioned from locally sourced olivewood and features a rich array of symbolic, religious, and artistic elements. The cylindrical case is composed of several distinctive sections, beginning with a smooth, polished lower handle which serves as the winding mechanism for the scroll. This handle is ingeniously connected internally to the upper spire of the case, allowing for controlled rolling of the parchment. The spire itself is gracefully formed in the likeness of a bishop’s chess piece—elegant and streamlined in shape. The central casing of the scroll is meticulously carved and displays two prominent depictions of revered Jewish holy sites: the Western Wall (כותל המערבי) and Rachel’s Tomb (קבר רחל). These scenes are hand-carved in relief with impressive detail and are accompanied by inscriptions in Hebrew identifying each site. Above them, the word “ירושלים” (Jerusalem) is prominently engraved, anchoring the piece in both geography and spiritual heritage. Enhancing the visual impact are two finely painted bands with lined designs—one encircling the top and one the lower section—adding a vibrant touch of color to the natural wood tones. Architecturally, the scroll case includes a lower rounded section and an upper crown-like top with subtle upward curves, giving the piece both balance and ceremonial elegance. The parchment itself is a hand-scribed Book of Esther, written in Sephardic script with meticulous precision. The text is arranged in neat, consistent columns—each containing 14 rows—on authentic hide parchment, preserving both ritual integrity and aesthetic beauty. A meaningful and decorative Judaica item, this olivewood Esther scroll case is a testament to Jerusalem's artisanal legacy and deep-rooted reverence for tradition and sacred text.
