About the Item

Table lectern in gold-plated bronze. Enamel cabochons. Juan Ruiz, Madrid, 1656 Rectangular portable tabletop lectern made of cast bronze relieved, cut out, chiselled, engraved and gilded and vdecorated, in addition, with colored enamels in ovals, which rests on four legs with the head and wings of an angel and a body of architectural shapes. The upper part has hinges to close it, leaving it compact thanks to an extension on the base decorated on the outside with engraved plant motifs and enamel ovals. This base presents an openwork decoration of classicalinfluenced plant elements with enamel ovals, and a central bronze oval with an inscription on the frame (COPIOSA APUD EVMREDEPTIO / QVIA APUD DOMINUM MISERICORDIA) and plant elements in dot engraving, and a scene figure in the center with words inscribed next to the characters. An angel or archangel (REDIMATVR / PRO PAGANO written next to his wings) with a cross on his chest imposes, crossing his arms, his hands on a character (with the text CHRISTIAM) and another character (EX REG APPAC). This scene alludes to the vision that Saint John of Matha had, founder with Saint Felix de Valois of the Trinitarian Order, when celebrating his first mass in Paris on January 28, 1193, and "redimatur christiano pro pagano" (to redeem a Christian in exchange for a pagan) would allude to the main task of this Order. The phrase "Quia apud..." mentioned is the fourth verse of Psalm 129, one of the penitentials that was prayed in the Trinitarian liturgy during the anointing of the sick. At the top you can read, between "Cs" engraved with dots, "IVAN RVIZ MADRID 1656". On the lower edge, also between “ces”, “CONBENTO DE LA SANTISSIMA TRINIDAD DE TOLEDO”. Note mthe crowned double-headed eagles on the supports at he top of the lectern, a heraldic emblem linked to the Habsburgs. The upper “plate” presents a vegetal composition like the one mentioned, and also has an oval in the center with a figurative scene and an inscription in the frame (I TRES SVNT QVI TESTIMONIVM DANT IN CELO PATER VERBVM SPIRIVS SANTVS ET HI TRE SVNUM SVNT),¡ Vulgate addition to the Mystery of the Trinity (the subject represented). A cross surrounded by an inscription (A SOLO SUMMO DEO, “of God alone”) is mlocated in the center of the oval, with Christ with the cross on one side, God the Father on the other, and the Holy Spirit in flight in the upper zone. The edge on which the book located on this lectern would rest, also openwork and with elongated enamel plates interspersed with plant compositions, leaving an oval with a palm and a flower flanking an A and an M together in the center and between “ses”. crowned (Hail Mary). There is evidence of a silversmith named Juan Ruiz working in Madrid on the date that appears engraved on the lectern. It is documented between 1623 and approximately 1660. The use of pairs of lecterns on the main altars of churches during mass was a peculiarity brought about by the Council of Trent and occurred mainly in the Hispanic liturgy. The idea was to hold two missals, thus avoiding changing places when the officiant read the Epistle and the Gospel. Thus, and although the cushion of medieval origin was recommended as the best support for the missal, it was a common pair of elements from the beginning of the 16th century. Let us cite, as an example, two wooden lecterns commissioned in 1506 for the Seville Cathedral, which were replaced in 1593 by another two silver ones, by Francisco de Alfaro and released in 1596. The convent of the Santísima Trinidad de Toledo, foundation of San Juan de Mata, received royal support at first. With the passage of time, the church fell into ruin, and a plan for a new building began in 1623, the work of Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli. It seems that the present lectern (and its partner) would be used in the chapel of the Virgen de la Peña de Francia. Pair of easels in the shape of an eagle. Bronze, iron. 16th-17th century. Rear supports. Pair of lecterns with tripod-shaped bases, claw-shaped legs with spheres, and a triangular part from which three baluster-shaped legs emerge, with elements in light tones that join at the top of this piece , leaving a vegetal form towards the lower area.
